About

Hello! My name is Melanie Chadwick and I’m a freelance illustrator & designer/maker living and working in Falmouth, Cornwall. I graduated in 2002 with a degree in Fine Art and from 2006-2008 I had the opportunity to live in Hong Kong. Since returning to the UK I have been developing my own art practice in screen-printing, illustration and design.

In April 2011 I set up a dedicated screen-printing studio and its from here that I create quirky homeware & stationery products for my Mellybee brand. I dedicate my other hours to freelance illustration & design, part-time teaching, and designing repeat patterns for banners & backgrounds.

I’ve developed a style that is playful and colourful, fun and quirky and at times thoughtful. I enjoy using fine liner pens and having strong outlines although sometimes I do push the boat out and create patterns just from shapes. I’m inspired by my surroundings especially living by the sea- boats, anchors, ropes, mermaids, fish, beach huts tend to feature heavily. Another love is tea and lettering- from a young age I’ve liked nothing better than to slurp a milky tea and draw words in bubble lettering. Inspiration also comes from films, toy shops, stationery stores, art galleries, old books, charity shops, junk emporiums and quaint-looking villages.

I enjoy baking cinnamon buns, hanging out with my husband, drinking tea and going for walks along the beach.

Presently I am looking for representation for my illustration work-if you think my style would suit your agency please get in touch.
