  • Whilst I'm nursing a cold I thought I'd have a little paint in my sketchbook and catch up on podcasts. In particular @andyjpizza's creative peptalk. He's just celebrated a 5 year anniversary which means I've been listening to his stories and creative advice for also 5 years! >>5 years ago I was in a different place to where I am now. I didn't keep sketchbooks, or lead workshops and I had just had my tonsils out and although I was running a creative business, screenprinting products, I was beginning to feel jaded and not where I wanted to be. I desperately needed creative business advice, and so discovering Andy's peptalks was quite literally a Godsend. >> So along with his talks and me investing in a @makeartthatsells course I gradually moved in the direction I wanted to go. In 2017 I stopped screen printing, closed my shop and focussed purely on illustration. I also started filming and uploaded my first vlog in the July on youtube, something which I had thought about for ages but never really had the courage to follow through.I started keeping sketchbooks and returned to my love of drawing. In 2018 I began running workshops and led my first sketchwalk in #porthleven that summer. >>Today I know what licensing is, I understand illustration markets and contracts and have worked with clients from all over the world. I've discovered a wonderul supportive creative community online via IG, youtube and even met and spoken to these people IRL. Over the last 2 years I've led workshops in gardens, coffee shops, plant shops, a private quay, a manor, harbours, hopefully inspiring all to sketch. I feel so much more connected to my community and the place I live in. I hadn't intended to write an essay but I guess if I stop and think about where I was and where I am now I am thankful for all the input I've had from people both consciously and subconsciously and if you're still reading, thankyou. ××× I found one of @greenweddingshoes fall flower posts circa 2014 and it inspired me to do an autumn flower double page spread. I really like the darker background, especially with the subtle colour changes, it's not my usual way but I like how it looks- textured and sketchy.
  • Fondly remembering childhood food memories for @theydrawandcook latest recipe challenge- my dad's Manchester Tart. My dad was the cook in our house growing up, always a home cooked meal each evening, I don't think I knew about take-aways until I left home! Puddings were served on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes either rice pudding or apple crumble and then every now and again as a treat Manchester Tart. Christmas and New Year was the other time of year when dad went into hyper-baking mode serving Sherry Trifle, Apple whip, Plum tart, Lemon cheesecake and Raspberry fool! What are your childhood food memories?   • Although I like to start and finish my sketches all on location sometimes it's just not possible. This one I started on Monday just before running a workshop in Coverack and simply didn't have time to capture it all. So I did a quick line sketch, took a photo (see 2nd pic) and made a mental note of the colours. I came back to it yesterday evening and for around 15 minutes relaxed and coloured. It was pretty nice actually, just sitting on the sofa and working from memory. I used a combo of @royaltalensuk ecoline brushpens and watercolour pencils from @arteza.co.uk.   • What a lovely group to workshop with today in Coverack #coverackartsociety at #lambeagehall. We looked at keeping a creative sketchbook, ideas and way to fill it with a range of practical take-aways. Our subjects ranged from coffee cups, seashells, herbs and spices, to portraits, food and buildings. We even drew in the rain (@helenstephenslion you'd be proud). We used a range of mediums too including @royaltalensuk ecoline brushpens, @derwentartofficial intense pencils, @arteza.co.uk watercolour pencils, @seawhiteofbrighton sketchpads, #fineliners, #sailorfountain pens, and my DIY watercolour tins.
