Christmas day I visited Cadgwith Cove to draw my d Christmas day I visited Cadgwith Cove to draw my daily postcard and then spent a little time exploring. This was the scene outside @cadgwithcovecrab with one of the fishing boats right outside the shop... I loved seeing the fishing boats lined up along the road, taking a rest.

Did you catch the Cove on the recent BBC 2 This Fishing Life by @frank_films_tv? It was really interesting to see father and sons fishing together as well as hear about the need to raise funds to secure the future of the net lofts which are vital to keep the fishing community alive at the cove. Find out more at @cadgwith_fishing_cove_trust.

Textures! These are just some of the textures that Textures! These are just some of the textures that I created for my Ruby Red Salad illustration on my @domestika course. It's one of the fun parts getting messy using black acrylic paint, finding old brushes and brayers, sponges and corks and anything else that would make an interesting texture. I easily created 12 sheets as it is quite addictive! They are then all scanned into photoshop and converted to tifs to use in illustrator and create textured illustrations. I now also have a bank of them to use in future illustration pieces. If you want to learn more about my methods and get to grips with working in illustrator with textures, I share all in my food illustration course, link in profile, it's been so encouraging to hear positive feedback from those who have signed up. Thanks to those of you who have been taking part so far and sharing your projects with me 🙂

Whilst I'm definitely missing drawing outside on l Whilst I'm definitely missing drawing outside on location (due to you know what) I'm enjoying these drawing from my sketchbook sessions. The pace isn't as frantic and gives me a chance to look closer at the marks and colours I've chosen. I do still try to complete the sketch quickly so that I'm not over thinking and am usually switching rapidly betwen pencils and crayons.
You may recognise this spot from a video I posted in January of my time spent sketching at Kynance Cove. These cottages are abandoned and in the distance is Asparagus Island- home to wild asparagus and birds on the Lizard peninsula. In case you're interested I started by going straight in with my Lamy pen, and then built up layers with watersoluble crayons and pencils ✏

A lot of my illustration work has the element of h A lot of my illustration work has the element of hand lettering added. It's something I really like to play with and I enjoy experimenting with different types of drawing tools- such as brushpens, fountain pens, fineliners. My hand lettering isn't neat and tidy like a calligrapher but more messy and raw, which means I end up with pages of letters of the same words all looking a bit different that I can then pick and choose from. I've also made quite a few fonts from my lettering too and use those mostly for labelling and when I need a bit more consistency.
In my course on @domestika I share about my lettering process and encourage participants to use it in their food recipe as I think it adds your own voice to your final illustration.
My course has been live almost a week now and I'm greatly encouraged to see how everyone is getting on. Link in profile if you'd like to find out more. Fresh photos taken by @ireneserrat.

Let's talk materials. In my last post I mentioned Let's talk materials. In my last post I mentioned that although most of my illustrations end up in a digital format I usually start off creating away from the screen. I like nothing better than unzipping my pencil case and picking out coloured pencils and pens to work with. Also within the last 8 months I've discovered watersoluble crayons and love the texture they give my pieces by mixing them in with my pencils and watercolours.
These are the materials that currently occupy my pencil case:

•Inktense pencils by Derwent- favs Bark, Leaf Green, Indigo, Poppy Red, Apple Green, Mustard, Baked Earth

•Luminance pencils by Caran Dache-just a few in limited colours -Burnt Ochre 10%, Payne's Grey, Raw Umbre, Cassel Earth

•Water Soluble crayons by Lyra creative - I love the greens, greys, bright blue, and a pop of pink

•Watercolours by Daniel smith

•Ecoline brush pens by Royal Talens-, Cold Grey is great for shadow

I think it's important to say that you really don't need a lot of materials to start sketching, when I began I just used a pot of black ink and a brushpen and over the years have explored different mediums and worked out what I like to use. So if you only have a couple of pencils start with those.

My @domestika course goes live today and in the first part we decide on a recipe to illustrate and then begin to sketch the ingredients. I chose a Ruby Red Salad and the two main colours are Red and Green, which I find work really well together. I then select a few tones from those two colour groups and collect pencils, crayons, and brush pens in those ranges. My favourite part of sketching is the random splats and splodges that appear on the page, some are intentional, most by accident but however they appear on the page they add life to the final piece and shouldn't be dismissed. If you signed up to my course I'm really looking forward to hearing what recipe you've chosen and to see you start the sketching process. 😁🎨 link in profile if you'd like to join too!

😊In my last post I mentioned that I'd share a 😊In my last post I mentioned that I'd share a bit more about my methods for producing illustrations and drawing from life is one of those practices I like to do, particularly if the subject matter is accessible and I can have it physically in front of me. I'm not saying that you shouldn't draw from photos, (let's be honest some subjects are impractical to have in person) but you do tend to see more when the item is right in front of you.
📷The photos above were taken during the filming of my first @domestika course Making Delicious Art.🎨 In it I share the steps I take to illustrate a salad recipe 🥗 and before we do anything on the computer a large part of the time is spent observing and drawing from the fresh ingredients. This way you become familiar with the shape, colour and texture of the subject and through a series of simple exercises can have a lot of fun capturing them down on paper. In my next post I'll share some of my favourite mediums I like to use.
