Keeping Sketchbooks

In 2017 I starting keeping sketchbooks following a move to the harbour town of Porthleven. It was here that I discovered the joys of sketching on location and over the course of 8 months set aside time everyday to sketch from my enviroment. I quickly filled up a number of small moleskines and decided this would be important to continue alongside my illustration work.

2020 Postcard Project

In 2020 I set myself a rather ambitious task of sketching a postcard everyday on location.  I learnt a lot along the way and when the pandemic hit I had to change tact for a short while. However 366 days later I had accomplished what I set out to do, gained a stack of postcards and skills in drawing in a range of weather conditions.  Read more about my sketching experience here.

Content and Podcast creation

Since my discovery of sketchbooks I have consistently recorded my practice on camera and now have over 5 years worth of video footage which I share on my Youtube channel.

Through this I have developed a love for publishing podcasts and content where I share my process and chat with other artists about running an art business. Click the links tab for more details.

The Joy of Sketching Online Course

In 2023 I launched my first independent online course on The Joy of Sketching on location.

The Joy of Sketching on location is all about building a joyful, consistent outdoor sketchbook practice, where there is no fear of drawing what you see and messy mark-making is to be embraced.

Where the Wildflowers Grow Course

This is my latest online course offering and features locating, identifying, sketching and illustrating wildflowers I find growing on the Lizard peninsula.

I take you out on 3 sketch walks to 3 different habitats where I introduce you to the wildflowers I find there. Back in the studio we explore colour palettes, mixed media and a final illustrated project.

My Sketchbook Pages

Below are pages from my sketchbooks. You’ll see the subject matter ranges from food to flowers, buildings to boats and wild Cornish landscapes. Most are drawn on location or from life. If you’d like to see more of my sketchbooks and hear about how I create them you’ll find lots of sketchbook tours on my Youtube channel. I share more on my Substack newsletter and I create cards and calendars from my work here. If you’d like to commission work in this style then please get in touch– I’d love to hear your project.
